Sports Illustrated 2011 Swimsuit Issue--- Thoughts on "Curvy" and Body Talk

This weekend, Candice and I went and saw "Just Go With It," and I have to say, we laughed so hard we cried during some scenes.  It was that funny.  Jennifer Aniston, Adam Sandler and movie newcomer, model Brooklyn Decker were awesome together.  Definitely a feel-good and hilarious movie.

I was thrilled when Sports Illustrated released their 2011 swimsuit issue this week and even happier that Brooklyn Decker, one of my favorite models (ever!) was in this year's issue (she was last year's cover girl, but it seems SI is switching out some of their regular models lately so I was hoping she would still be in it).  Speaking of which, where the heck is Marissa Miller? She's not doing Victoria's Secret or SI anymore?

Here's a few of my favorite Brooklyn shots (all images are from si.com)

Obsessed with this bikini!  I tried to find it online but it's not part of the current collection.

Now, the real reason I wanted to post about the SI issue is because of a debate that went on today on a message board about the SI models and their bodies.

I always loved SI's approach of selecting their models, because, from my perspective, they have more achievable and athletic bodies than runway and high fashion models. What I should clarify here, is that I mean their bodies are relate-able/achievable/realistic for me. I'm tall, I have a long torso, I have wider hips, I work out regularly. For me, these model's bodies are a representation of what I feel I could accomplish with a lot of hard work and healthy eating.

It seems my comment sparked a little bit of debate, especially when I said I liked how curvy the models were---particularly Brooklyn Decker, Esti Ginzburg and Jessica Gomes

Here's the thing. It's all semantics---everyone has a different way of assigning meaning to a word.  For some, curvy means thin girls with boobs and hips, for others it means a plus-sized woman and for others, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez would fit their definition of "curvy."

The point is, because we have different definitions of the word, people can have strong feelings when the word is used in a way they can't relate to.  For example, I always considered myself curvy because I tend to carry my weight in my lower body.  Some people would think I'm crazy to define myself as curvy, but that's how I feel about my body. I think a lot of the SI models have gorgeous curves. Yes, they are all thin---but they have larger breasts and thighs and stomachs that aren't ripped with visible 6 packs (or so bony that they look emaciated.)  Is that everyone's definition of curvy? No. But it's part of mine---I believe that everyone from some of the SI models to Beyonce to Jennifer Lopez to Kim Kardashian to Crystal Renn are all curvy.

There isn't just one definition to me. "Curvy" encompasses too many body types to make one body the definition of the very word.

I was reading an article featuring Allure Editor Linda Wells in the New York Times recently and she was quoted saying:

“I don’t want to photograph skinny models,” she said, “but they’re always going to be thinner than everyone else. They’re models. We recently shot Bar Refaeli, who’s more of a Victoria’s Secret kind of model, for the April issue, and she’s a woman with a body. She’s got curves. She’s got thighs.”

I have always loved Bar Refaeli and also think she had a gorgeous, curvaceous body.  Some women would look at her and feel differently and that's okay. Remember, it's all about the meaning you assign to the word.

The debate also spun off into another topic---how women talk about their own bodies. I had someone contact me on my formspring page telling me that it offends her when I say that I am insecure about the size of my hips, because she is larger than me. You can read my response here.

I was taken aback by the comment because ALL women have body insecurities. As women, we need to support each other through those insecurities and not deny ourselves the right to express them.  Whether a woman is a size two or 22, she has the right to feel insecure about any part of her body. It would be unnatural NOT to have any insecurities. My major insecurity is my hips.  I don't hate my body or my hips, but I do wish they were a bit smaller.  It's just a little insecurity that doesn't affect my day to day life.

What's your take on the word curvy?  What do you think about women expressing their body insecurities?  When someone who is thinner or in better shape then you tells you about one of their insecurities, does it make you feel worse about yourself, or does it motivate you to work hard to reach your goals?  I'm obviously in the latter category.  When I see someone who I feel has a body that I would desire for myself, and it's someone who has similar proportions to me, I like to use that as inspiration to motivate me to keep working hard at the gym.

Please share your thoughts with me below!  I love reading your comments and appreciate everyone who takes the time to participate :)

Tim Gunn Coming to Houston & Bikini Season is Around the Corner (yikes!)

Firstly, a PSA to all of my lovely and stylish Houston readers: Style expert Tim Gunn will be at The Galleria Mall this Saturday, March 27 to share his expertise as he hosts a Spring 2010 fashion show featuring Juicy Couture, Kate Spade New York and Lucky Brand Jeans. Guests will enjoy live style transformations, get invaluable fit and style tips and learn how to maximize their wardrobe for Spring. It's happening inside of the Galleria mall right near Ann Taylor (on the lower level right beside J. Crew.)

Because the event starts at 1 PM, I sadly won't be able to be there... and I love love love Tim Gunn ("
Make it Work!")

Why, you ask? It's because I have my last color/trim with my wonderful hairdresser before he moves to Italy next month. I couldn't imagine not having one last color appointment with him (and uh, it's been months since I last had it colored...though, I'm pretty thankful I can let it go so long between visits.) I'm going to miss him (and so is my hair.)

Have you ever "lost" your hairdresser? What did you do? I'll probably remain at the same salon and just have another stylist take a shot at my hair, but I am terrified about trusting someone else. I just like really blended, low-maintenance color and I think it takes real skill and talent to do that properly.

If you can make it out to see Tim Gunn, please do! I'm sure the event will be fabulous!

I want to give a quick update on my fitness progress (or lack thereof.) I have been trying to "get back on track" for like 3 weeks now. I completely failed. But that's OK. I can't beat myself up about it forever. So today when I got home from work I so didn't want to work out. Like absolutely totally 100% didn't want to do it. But I forced myself to do one of my "Elle Make Better" workouts. I just pushed through it and told myself "it's just 30 minutes."

I seriously admire anyone who can stick with the P90X program. I just haven't been able to. It's too much for me. I think I need to work out more before I do the program on a daily basis.

Bikini season is just around the corner and I need to get toned up again! What do you do when you're in a rut and what is your summer workout plan? Let me know below!

Oh- and before I go- one more update: my skin has been really weird lately. Like super peel-y and uneven. I've been using the Clarisonic and haven't changed anything so I think the weather is what's making it act up. It's cold one day and warm the next. Very inconsistent. Does your skin freak out when the weather changes?

OOTD, A Yoga Stretch Workout & YouTube Fitness Gurus

I couldn't resist immediately wearing my new BCBG purchases so my OOTD involves my new BCBG skirt and top. PS- I am totally getting a new full-length mirror for our bedroom because I hate having the distractions of our living room in the background of all of my photos. Don't get me wrong, I love our living room, but NOT as a backdrop.

Here it is:

Cardigan- Express; Top- BCBG; Skirt- BCBG; Tights- Target; Shoes- Jessica Simpson.

I really love the skirt and top. I am so glad I got both items. I think they look better in person but they photograph OK.

This morning, I woke up and my entire body was so sore. I couldn't even take one step today without feeling pain. I decided to skip my usual Monday evening power pilates class and head downstairs to my home-gym and try out the "Elle Make Better-Workout Yoga" DVD.

The instructor in this video is Yoga guru Tara Stiles who got famous on YouTube for her Yoga workout videos. I believe she used to be a model (or still is) but she now owns her own Yoga studio in NYC.

I did the stretching workout because I needed to release all of my sore muscles. It was about 20 minutes long and it felt great. I also realized how not-flexible I am. I used to be a super flexible gymnast, able to contort my body in every which way. Sigh. It's one of my fitness goals to improve my flexibility. My personal trainer actually told me that it's so important to stretch and do Yoga because it really helps you build long, lean muscle and recover more quickly from workouts.

I thought the Yoga video was good...but it was hard because you can't really look at the TV when you're in downward dog. The video is filmed with a voice over of Tara talking you through the steps, so you have an idea of what you should be doing (just by listening), but it's difficult to do each move correctly if you don't know any Yoga moves. Fortunately, I have taken Yoga classes before so I had a somewhat better awareness of the moves, but it was still difficult. It did stretch me out and make me feel great though. 20 minutes well spent!

Speaking of YouTube and fitness, Elle (AllThatGlitters21 on YouTube) recently made a video about her health and fitness routine.

In this video, she mentioned some of her favorite health and fitness channels, and after reviewing them myself, I thought I'd post them here for anyone interested in learning some new moves, fitness routines and health and nutrition advice.

The channels are: DietHealth, SarahsFabChannel, ToneItUp and Shell'sFitness101. I really love what YouTube has become and I am so thankful that there's such a strong community of women who share their beauty, health and fitness advice with the world. I genuinely enjoy watching so many of the beauty and health guru videos. They are such a part of my daily routine.

I also REALLY love Zuzana from BodyRockTV. Her workouts are definitely geared towards more advance exercisers (she is RIPPED!) but I do love her professional looking videos (well, professional looking compared to other YouTubers.) She also posts her daily workouts on her website.

Do you have any favorite YouTube Health and Fitness channels or websites? Let me know in the comments below, because I'm always looking for more inspiration.

Thank you for reading lovelies!

xoxo,

Veronika.

Motivation Mondays: Leah- makeup artist, girly girl and home-gym friendly!

I am very excited about today's "Motivation Mondays" post, because a beautiful friend of mine from high school agreed to share her beauty tricks and secrets with us...and it's all coming from a professional makeup artist, since that is what she does as her career. Leah and I were able to stay in touch via the awesomeness of Facebook, and I knew she would be a perfect fit for Motivation Mondays.

From her beautiful, long and shiny naturally red hair to her gorgeous skin and smile, I would say Leah's look is wonderful beauty inspiration. I am so jealous of her red hair! As you know from my previous posts, I absolutely LOVE red heads! I wish I could have red hair, but sadly, I don't think I have the skin tone for it.

If you'd like to know Leah's best beauty, fitness and skin and hair care tips, read on.

And just to add a fun little tidbit to this post- Leah and I had an English Media class together in high school, and we had our first dose of "modeling" in a photo shoot we did for a "denim line" for a class project. I will never forget that fun day and I still have the photos! We even climbed a tree to get cool shots posing amongst the fall leaves. Memories, memories!

Thank you so much Leah for sharing your tips with us, and for being so incredibly sweet!

Here we go:

Name: Leah M.

Age:26

Career: Beauty Advisor/Makeup Artist, trained by Lise Watier Makeup

Who is your beauty/fashion inspiration and why?
I would say my beauty and fashion inspirations are for Fashion I like Jessica Simpson's Style I like how she can look so different no matter where she is going. I love how she can throw on her jeans, boots and over-sized sunglasses and bag and go out shopping but also on the red carpet she looks so beautiful and polished. I don't really mimic any stars style in particular there are certain items I see in magazines that I love but I feel like my style is kind of my own. As far as beauty my "nickname" with my co-workers is the "bronze godess" because you will never see me without self tanner and bronzer and some sort of illuminating eye shadow so with that being said I would definitely say my beauty icons are the Victoria's Secret Angels because they have that gorgeous Tahitian bronze glow, always look dewy and like they have a halo glow on their skin that is my inspiration.

What do you do to stay in shape nowadays?
I was a ballet dancer for 13 years and I feel those years molded me into the woman I am today! Anyone who has ever been a dancer knows what it can do for your body, the stretching the muscle toning and overall the cardio workout that it gives you there is truly nothing like it in the world to me! I do not dance at this point in my life though so enter my second love I found in....PILATES! I do love the stretching and overall body toning you can get from this workout. When I began doing Pilates years ago with my University roommates we started by doing the video in our house and slowly moved up from basic to advanced workouts. Now because it is easier for me I will still at the very least do this advanced video at my own home but I also enjoy going to Pilates classes once a week at the gym near my house. I am more of the "home gym" kind of girl at this point in my life I make sure to do my Pilates times a week as well as using my mat, resistance bands and stability ball for core strengthening and ab workout.

Another thing I love to do at this point in my life is walking! Although I have always loved the feeling of taking a nice long walk the main reason why I have introduced this into my everyday routine is because I have a VERY energetic 10 month old Boxer. He is my motivation to get out there even when I am tired and just want to lay down on the couch I know that I cant say no to his little face. I have made it my goal to walk, "power walk", or jog with him everyday for at least one hour. I am a Canadian girl and we have had some very cold days but I still make sure to give him and myself this amount of time everyday even if I have to do a 30 minute walk in the morning and a 30 minute jog at night. I feel so much more energized and motivated since I have started doing this, don't underestimate the power of walking and jogging it sounds sooo easy but it really can make a difference in your life.

For those of you who do not have a furry friend I really do recommend you tie up your running shoes and put on your iPod and get out there too you will feel great and if you start off walking soon enough you will find yourself able to jog and stay out longer as well. For those of you who are indoor girls and still want the overall benefits of the "all over workout" you can get this from an Elliptical Trainer. I love my Elliptical Trainer I have been using this for a few years and i love it so much, on days that we are more inside due to weather or if I am feeling particularly peppy I will get on the Elliptical Trainer for 45minutes-1 hour. I found it a little difficult to do this when I first started but you do have to work up to a certain time and you can increase your resistance and incline as well.

Basically for me I am doing a structured workout 3-4 times a week and making sure to get in my one hour of walking a day. This is just a regime that works for me and my lifestyle, I think that is the most important thing to do when finding a fitness plan make sure it works for you and you have a clear goal in your mind of what you would like to achieve. I tend to alter my fitness plans at different points in my life and that is key- DON'T get into a rut keep it fun and that way you will be more motivated to achieve your goals. Make sure you switch it up a bit if you are going to the gym integrate yourself into taking a class one day a week or get together a group of girls and get your water bottles and hit the bike path or take a walk. Have fun with it!

What are some foods/snacks/meals that you would recommend to woman who are trying to eat healthier?
We all know that a good fitness plan in conjunction with a balanced diet= an overall "healthy lifestyle" so it is very important what we are eating on a daily basis. What I would recommend for meals are:

Breakfast: Yogurt (I love Activia with Probiotics) or plain yogurt with fresh fruit (blue berries, strawberries, etc.) and granola (optional)

Lunch/Dinner: For afternoon and evening meals it is important to try to eliminate "pre prepared" food like anything frozen. I do not like to cook with or use a lot of salt or butter on anything. I like to eat a lot of chicken in a whole wheat wrap with veggies at lunch is so great too! At dinner time chicken and salad is my favorite with a vinaigrette dressing, No creamy dressings! I am loving asparagus right now which I didn't care for up until a few months ago but now I am all about it. I also love green peppers, broccoli and cucumbers...uncooked veggies are my favorite and easy to bring to work with you as well! I have also just recently started loving Salmon as well it is such a healthy dinner alternative and is great with rice, or in a salad.

Snacks: Ok this is my downfall snack foods are my arch enemies! I usually do not have a sweet tooth so that is not my biggest problem its the salty snacks oh chips and crackers how I love thee...sigh! OK, so when I am dying for a bowl of chips or cheese and crackers big enough to sink a battle ship I will try to reach for a bowl of unsalted nuts or popcorn instead. Or the best thing I can do for myself is just don't have it in the house. Do not have those foods at your disposal when you are trying to nix them "what you don't have wont haunt you". In all seriousness I feel that it is ok to have what some people call a "cheat day" on the weekend or something while you watch a movie or I do like to say its ok to do somethings in "moderation". Lastly I think there are many benefits from taking a daily Woman's Mutil Vitamin and also I take a daily dose of Vitamin C in capsule form.

Where do you love to shop for clothing?
My favorite stores to shop at are Guess, H&M, and Club Monaco. I do find that most stores are hit and miss depending on the season. I can usually find an inexpensive shirt in a pinch at Costa Blanca or Urban Behavior (for my Canadian girls, I don't think these stores are in the states?) Veronika's Note: we don't have those stores in the US, but we have similar ones.

Describe your personal sense of style:
My style is very reflective of my mood and where I am going. You will find an array of clothes in my closet that range from quite dressy to casual and everything in between. The main thing you would notice about my sense of style is there is a lot of BLACK! I find black clothing to be easy and sophisticated and makes me feel good when I wear it.

It's funny if there are 3 colours of one shirt my eye will 9 out of 10 times go straight to the black one. I find there are certain staples that every girl should have in her closet in my favorite shade: A black cardigan (that can be put on with any top or dress to make it practical no matter where you are), a black dress (that can go from casual to semi formal depending on shoes and accessories), a black skirt (that can be professional or trendy, I love the pencil skirt), a black jacket/blazer (can change the look of any outfit instantly), and a great black handbag! (I am sure most of us would have more than one of these though). Veronika's Note: You know I love black clothes, Leah! We are so on point with our love of black clothes and accessories!

With these staple items you can pair them with anything and look great no matter where you are going! I love to be very girly with textures- I love ruffles and bows but I have to be careful with what colours I wear as a redhead I find pinks and reds to be not so great on me so I tend to lean towards blues, white, coral (more peach than pink) to add the pops of colour to my wardrobe. My belief is your signature style should be a distinct reflection of you and your uniqueness, find what works for you!

What are some of your cant live without em' clothing items?
My favorite pieces of clothing are not shockingly BLACK! My favorite items are ones that make me feel good when I wear them and would be: My black sweater dress it has a beautiful back cutout and looks hot with stilettos or pair it with tights and boots! My next item that is close to my heart are my Guess boots they go to the knee and look great with anything and everything! The last item that I covet are my Guess skinny jeans, now I was pretty skeptical of this cut when they first came out but I embraced them after I tried my first pair, they fit like a glove and are so easy to dress up or down.

What are your favorite 5-10 makeup products?
Ahhhh how I love makeup, being a makeup artist I have so many items that would be on my list. I always think about it when I hear people ask what one or two items would you take if you were stranded on an island? I would find this soo difficult because I am so not just a mascara and lip gloss girl (although I can be some days) my favorite products would have to be:

-Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfection Powder (The healthy skin powder! It has traces of gold, 48 minerals,11 amino acids and peptide complex which creates the most flawless looking skin and smooths out the look of lines around the eyes)

-Christian Dior Sun Powder Spray (This is a spray bronzer, the colour is amazing your skin truly looks sun kissed. MY TIP: Spray in a "S" shape over your face with your eyes closed and blend very quickly with fingers because it can be difficult if it dries.) I add a bit more on my cheeks and blend again.

-Benefit Hoola Bronzer- This is a nice matte Bronzer which I think everyone can use. MY TIP:Apply it where the sun would naturally hit your skin don't forget forehead, nose and chin not just cheeks!

-Lise Watier Waterproof Eye liner in Cacao (I believe this is only available in Canada) These liners are the smoothest pencils I have ever tried and last all day!

-Cover FX Radiant FX powder in Golden Bronze- This products is a mineral loose powder that I use on the cheek bone it creates the "halo" look a-la Victoria's Secret Models on the runway.

-Smashbox Lash DNA Mascara

-Clarins Intense Bronze Self Tan Tint- This self tanner is for face, do not fear the name it is the most beautiful, natural tan I have ever had. It looks like you were on vacation for a week! This is a liquid product you apply with a cotton pad and again the colour comes out quite dark brown but it instantly gives your skin a glow. You can put your makeup on over it and it will develop over the day. The best part of it is there is no yucky smell from the Dihydroxyacetone (self tanning ingredient) and the texture is like water so it is nice and light for your facial skin.

-Urban Decay eyeshadow in Chopper

What are your top 5 hair products and how do you style your hair?
My top five hair products are:
-Bed Head Control Freak Shampoo
-Bed Head Control Freak Conditioner
-Bed Head Control Freak Frizz Control & Straigthener
-Bed Head Foxy Curls Spray
-Biosilk Serum

As you can see most of my favorite products are by Bed Head, I have tired a million products and these work best for me. I have naturally wavy hair and I straighten it constantly. The reason I don't embrace my curls is because they are quite temperamental and certainly don't remind me of those waves you see the Victoria Secret models sporting. When I do want to give my hair a break from heat styling I will use a Shampoo and Conditioner for enhancing curls and spray the curl enhancing spray and scrunch my hair as I spray.

I will let my hair air dry for the most part but usually will get the dampness out with a diffuser attachment on my hair dyer. I have told myself because I have basically virgin red hair (except the one time I got caramel highlights in my hair in high school) that it is acceptable to heat style my hair to death as I am not frying it any other way. Hair denial, I know. So this is my routine when I do my hair straight I do love to use a Shampoo and Conditioner that will help my curls calm down and fight frizz.

Then comes my absolute favorite hair product the Control Freak Frizz Control and Straightener. This product goes in your hair when it is wet, what I love about it is that it is not sticky or too heavy like I find many other "straightening" products are. I really don't like alot of styling products textures but this one is WOW and it doesn't change the feeling of your hair at all. I will blow dry my hair in sections semi roughly and then follow up with my CHI straightening iron. I blow dry my bangs to the side with a large round brush and have an off side part as well, I like the way it shapes my face best this way. Usually I fight frizz and get some added shine from the Biosilk serum and tada that is my easy hair routine. I like to basically stick to the same style, I don't stray too far from it but I am going for a haircut in the next few days as I am writing this I am seeing a lot of split ends not a good look!

What are your best beauty tips/secrets?
I am a huge skincare lover and I think it is important to note that you can have the most expensive and beautiful makeup and if you don't take care of your skin your makeup will not do as much for you. You definitely need to start with a fresh canvas, not saying that we all don't have our imperfections because we are human but it is important to do the best we can to take care of our skin.

My beauty tips are: I always exfoliate at least once a week. Your skin naturally has an exfoliation cycle of about 28 days and as we age it slows down that means that there are many built up dead skin cells on the top layer of our skin just waiting to be "sloughed" off. These cells sitting on our skin will affect the way our foundation lays on our skin and will give you the rough "scale like" texture. I like to use a "man made" exfoliant. Which means no apricot scrubs! It is a misconception that people think because its "natural" its better for you. This is the one time I say don't go by this philosophy. Natural exfoliants are irregular shapes and will scratch the skins surface which could lead to infections. "Man made beads" are round in shape and will buff the skin not scratch it.

The best thing after exfoliating is a mask one that hydrates and infuses your skin with energy I also like to do a mask at least once a week. My favorite one is by Biotherm called Flash Recharge it is jam packed with vitamins, minerals, and ginseng and will help reinvigorate the skin and fake an 8 hour nights sleep even with our busy schedules.

My last and probably favorite beauty tip is MICRODERMABRASION! This treatment can be done on a higher scale at a dermatologists office and will basically buff and polish the top layers of the skin leaving your skin more even from redness and discolorations, even scarring from acne, helps with brightening the skin and hyper pigmentation (sun damage) and large pores. Everyone can benefit from doing this at home treatment. The aluminum oxide crystals found in these products are not like the ones found in basic exfoliants they will "polish" the skin on a different level than that of an exfoliator and will remove damaged epidermal tissue. You can usually notice a dramatic change in the feel and look of your skin after only one treatment. I would not recommend doing this on the day of an event because the skin tends to be a little red, those with extremely sensitive skin should refrain from using this method of skincare but virtually everyone else can benefit. I will usually do an at home microderm treatment once every two weeks or when my skin needs an instant "pick me up".

Tell us about your skincare routine:
My skin care routine is I like to do my basic cleansing, toning and moisturizing regime twice a day. Bearing in mind that all day creams should protect the skin and all night creams should repair your skin so look for that when you are buying them. I will remove my makeup with a Micellar water like Vichy's and this takes off your makeup so easily then I like to put on a hydrating moisturizer like Vichy's Aqualia Thermal Light it hydrates your skin with water not heavy oils and will decrease sensitivity by 49%. I also will do a self tan on my face every other day because I often exfoliate I need to reapply it often. My body gets a sun kissed glow once a week as well. Of course like I said above I exfoliate and do a facial mask once a week as well as a microdermabrasion treatment once every two weeks.

Which of your accomplishments are you most proud of?
I would say that I am proud that I followed my heart and decided to become a Beauty Advisor. I went to university with a major in Sociology and then later realized that my true passion was something else. I love that I can help some of my clients feel good about themselves everyday. I have seen them through some of their best times and some of the hardest times in their lives and there is something about being able to make someone feel good about themselves even in the smallest way that touches my heart!

Thank you so much again Leah for your awesome tips, tricks and for sharing your favorite products. I am sure my readers will very much enjoy reading this entry! If you have any questions for Leah, please leave them below and I will ask her to answer them for you!

As always, thank you SO much for reading, and I hope this post was motivational to you!

Motivation Mondays and Lately I'm Loving (Holy Grail Products!!!)

Don't get too excited ladies, I don't have a real "Motivation Monday" interview to post today, but I will update you all on how I am doing with my fitness. Yesterday I posted that I finally fit back into size 4 pants which I haven't done in a few years (I'm typically a 6, which is great, but I wanted to get back down to a 4 because I was carrying some extra bulk in my thighs and hips.)

I was frustrated because I had been working out so much and didn't feel like I was getting results-but now I know that's not true.
I think as women, we are often too critical of our bodies to see the changes happening before our eyes.

I know now that all of my hard work has indeed paid off.
I can also safely say I am addicted to working out and I have some advice for ladies looking to get fit this year: DO NOT count on a gym.

That's right. For years and years every time I wanted to get fit, I would join a gym and go and do the same tired old cardio and weight machine routine. I didn't even know what I was doing, what my goals were...I was just lost, going from machine to machine mindlessly (I'm not saying this is how everyone who's new to the gym starts off, but that was me.)

If you're like me, and you get stuck in ruts, get out of the gym and get into a pilates studio that only offers pilates, or one that offers both pilates and yoga.

I go to
Your Body Center in Houston, and they have some special pricing going on until January 31st if you are in the area and would like to try it. I also started to see a personal trainer at River Oaks Fitness. Mike is my trainer and he is awesome. He told me during my last session that he actually trains me at the level he would train someone who has been training with him for 2-3 months. It made me feel good to know I was really being challenged and that my pilates classes have made such a dramatic difference in my core strength.

For some reason, I get EXCITED to go to pilates classes, yet I dread going to the gym. I actually might consider just getting an unlimited monthly membership to the pilates studio and having that as my main workout, but I still want to have a gym membership so I can do cardio. Then again, I could always do cardio outdoors or at home.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind gyms, I just don't feel a sense of direction at the gym. I don't feel I have a plan when I'm there. In class, you just follow the instructor and really challenge yourself, much like you do with the coaching of a personal trainer (which I also recommend if you can get a good deal.) Check out
Groupon for personal training deals in your city.

Anyways, that's just my advice, take it with a grain of salt. This is just what works for me and gives me results.

Before I go, I want to talk about a few products I am loving and are creeping up to Holy Grail status (!!!!!!!)

1. Pureology Nanoworks shampoo.
I convinced myself I finally hit the deep end when I bought a $50 bottle of shampoo (okay, maybe it was $53 but it pains me to write that.) Let me tell you something about this shampoo. It makes me feel like I have different hair on my head. Like my old hair just "went somewhere else in the universe" and my new hair moved in. I don't know quite how to explain it, but my hair has a different...texture to it. It feels very smooth and just...different. I don't know if I can use another shampoo. The most amazing part is I never lose any volume. It's like the shampoo makes your hair more...manageable. Honestly, I don't even hate my hair anymore or think I need a major change. I feel my hair is different. I don't know if it's an "I spent $53 on this bottle of shampoo so it better be good" delusion or if it's real...but it FEELS real. If you are as insane as me, and want to spend that much to try it, I highly recommend it. How do I justify it? I only wash my hair ever 3-4 days...so I figure the bottle will last me long. Uh-huh. Yep. Plusalso, on Sunday at Starbucks the girl taking my order told me that I had gorgeous hair. So it MUST be working...right? right?

2.
MAC Feeling' Good Lip Conditioner (SPF 15)
MAC's website describes this as a "light neutral beige" but to me it looks like a soft baby beigey-pink...and we all know I'm a sucker for baby pink anything. I bought this because I was looking for a lip conditioner with SPF (for the vaycay) and for something with a teeny tiny bit of color. It is so good. Not only is it actully a good product (makes my lips so soft and moisturized) but the soft color actually gives my lips a really natural apperance but with a little something extra. Most of you know I'm not really a "product on the lips" kind of person...but I love this so much I reapply like a psycho all day. Love love love. I've been waiting for MAC to come out with a light color in these, because I own the "Petting Pink" one and don't love it as much (too much color I guess.) I really recommend this balm if you love nude, light pink and beigey glosses.
3. Bobbi Brown Gel Liner in "Black Mauve"
Okay. I know I said I would never cave and stray from my beloved MAC Fluidline gel liners...but but but...this beautiful, shimmery eyeliner caught my eye at Neiman Marcus and it was just...love at first sight. Plus...BB liners stay on like crazy. I am confident I could jump into the ocean, swim around like a mermaid and emerge, with my liner perfectly intact. I had to start using eye makeup remover. Serously, it's that good. I have even been neglecting my precious MAC "dipdown" liner because I love this color so much (it's not black or mauve...it's more of a dark brown with a shimmer to it.) It is described on her website as a "deep chocolate mauve" yum! If you are looking to try a new liner and you need crazy staying power...run don't walk to a BB counter and I promise you won't be sorry!

Thank you so much for reading!

Before you go (if you like) tell me about your fitness goals and progress and let me know if you've discovered any awesome products I should know about (just please, for the love of God, don't tell me if it's another $50 shampoo!)

A New Year: Make Better, Not Make-Over

Elle Magazine's January issue featured an entire section about "making better" (instead of the dreaded "making-over".)

I thought this was a really positive message- because after all, most women want to be true to who they are when making improvements, not made-over into someone they hardly recognize.

I admittedly got sucked-in by the ads promoting
Elle Magazine's new "Make Better" Workout DVD Collection (available on amazon.com)

EDIT: Umm... I just went to Elle.com and noticed you can get ALL THREE DVD's for $44.95 and I paid $29.99 for just one on Amazon.com (I'm going to return the Amazon one because I ordered all 3 instead- way better deal and now I'll have 3 different workouts.) I hate when stuff like this happens, but I wanted to warn my readers so you too can get the better deal! (Oddly, Elle Magazine promotes getting the DVD's on Amazon in their ads...wtf?)

Brooklyn Decker is one of my favorite models, so when I saw the previews online, I just had to buy the video. I purchased the "Elle Beauty Sculpt" DVD, because I like to learn new moves I can use at the gym. I also like having the option of working out at home for the days where I don't feel like leaving the house, but don't want to feel like a lazy slob!

I got the "Beauty Sculpt" DVD, pictured above- it should arrive by the 31st!

I will let you ladies know how good the videos are when I start them. I previewed Jillian Michael's "30 Day Shred" today too, and that looks like a good workout as well.

For some strange reason, my superhuman memory fails me when it comes to workout moves (yet I strangely remember plot lines from old Babystitters Club and Sweet Valley High books I read in 7th grade). That's why I like to have videos- they remind me and teach me the right moves that actually get results.

I remember Jessica Simpson was supposed to come out with a workout video when she was all toned for her role in "Dukes of Hazard" and I was disappointed that it was never released (she seems to be gaining lately so I guess she stopped her super intense workouts anyways.) Luckily, she is one of those women that looks good at any weight.

Do you ever use workout videos, or do you prefer going to the gym? Personally, I like to switch it up and keep things fresh, so a combination of group classes at my gym, gym workouts, home workouts and pilates classes at a seperate studio work for me.

And, because I just can't imagine leaving this post without some more pictures of the gorgeous Brooklyn Decker...here you go!

isn't she just stunning? *sigh*

and...her body is pretty darn good fitness inspiration, don't you think?

I could post 20 more pictures...but this has already gotten out of hand!

Veronika.

Motivation Mondays- A Personal Training Experience

I know I haven't done "Motivational Mondays" in forever. One of my friends is in the midst of myweddingisamonthaway hardcore wedding planning, so I've forgiven her lateness with her responses (I promise they will be totally worth it when I do post them!)

So today, I'm going to talk about the progress I've been making with my fitness. Granted, I didn't go to the gym tonight, but I did go on Sunday, and I'm still feeling the burn (ie: I'm in pain.) I'm also still taking pilates classes at a local studio (love.)

I got this amazing personal training deal on groupon.com, as I mentioned a few posts back. It was $30 for five 30 minute personal training sessions. The gym is a personal training-only gym, which basically means that although they have cardio machines and weight equipment, they only conduct personal training there, and don't have regular memberships available like most gyms (which is good, because it's a smaller space-ideal for one on one workouts.)

I had my first session on Saturday morning, and let me tell you something- all that "personal training is a waste of money and overpriced" BS that I used to spew, was definitely so very wrong. I guess sometimes you can't see the value in something until you experience it for yourself. And experience it, I did.

Yes, it's pricey (and I couldn't afford the regular rates if I wanted to go once per week, unless I cut out shopping, and well, I think we all know that's not going to happen)...but what you get for the price is, well, priceless.

So I go into my session thinking "I'm pretty fit, I've been working out regularly for a few months," and then I do some of the excercises and I cannot believe the burning pain shooting through my body with each move.

I was literally in complete disbelief and shock that a tiny adjustment of how I held a weight or at what angle I did a cruch made such a difference...such a sweet, burning difference.

The most horrifying part of the entire session was using this piece of equipement they've got called "Jacob's Ladder." It only looks like it would be fun. It actually feels like hellish torture. I had to do 100 steps on it, and I thought I was going to collapse right then and there. Those 100 steps felt like I did an entire leg-burning spin class in less than 2 minutes. Lord have mercy, seriously.
It was disheartening to see how out of shape I actually was- or so I thought. My trainer told me, that in fact, I was not out of shape at all, and that doing something your body hasn't done before is always a challenge, even for people who are really in shape. Hmm...maybe he's right...after all, I don't remember the last time I climbed up an inclined ladder that just kept going faster and faster (that's how it felt, at least.)

That's what's so incredible- like I said earlier- it's not what you do, it's how you do it, when it comes to working out. I even discovered during my session that all this time, I had been holding my free weights incorrectly when trying to work my biceps. Not because I didn't know what I was doing, but because of the way my body is built, I had to readjust the way I was lifting to make the excercise work the way it's supposed to.

I'm thankful I'm able to partake in some personal training sessions so that I can learn what I need to do for my body, and reach my goals (hello Victoria's Secret toned-ness). If you can get a great deal on personal training, I defiitely recommend doing so.

Have you been working out recently? Have you ever used a personal trainer? Did you enjoy the experience or not? Please leave me a comment below!

Oh, and while you're still here, if you want some amazing (but unatainable for most people who's job isn't staying fit) inspiration, check of Zuzana on BodyRockTV. She does these amazing workouts on her YouTube channel daily, and shares fitness tips and advice on her website. Plus, her abs are freakingincredible.

Veronika.

Black Friday Madness and Spin Class Awesomeness

Yesterday, after I awoke from my post-Black Friday shopping trip nap, I took a spin class at my gym for the first time. My bestie Candice told me it would be "hard, but worth it," and she was right.

The thing about spin class, is that it passes by so quickly. That hour is over in a flash. I also love the upbeat music they play. It's so motivating and keeps you pumped. Not to mention, before the class began, the instructor said "If you're lazy, and don't like to work hard, this is not the class for you." I loved him!

So here's the thing about spin class...my ummm...lady area is sore. Yep, it actually feels bruised. They say you can buy a little gel seat cover to make it more comfy, and I may just have to invest. I'f you've ever done spin class, do you have any tips on making the seat more comfy?

I plan to take spin class at least once a week. You can't beat how many calories you burn, and it really breaks a sweat. You leave feeling like you really worked hard.

Now, onto my Black Friday shopping. I focused on swimwear, since we are going on vacation soon. I bought a super-cute bikini, beach bag and beach cover-up at Zingara Swimwear. They only have one location in the US, and it happens to be here in Houston (yay!) They have some of the prettiest/most unique swimwear I've seen, and I always know that not many other people will have the same suit, because it is unavailable elsewhere (unless you live in South America.)

The first suit I got is similar to the one above. Only the top I got is a triangle top, and it has 3 layers of ruffles, in all different prints. The suit's colors look brighter in person, and look amazing with a tan! The bottoms also have a cute little ruffle, but are cut super small in the back, which is why I've been working out so hard!

I also got this gorgeous animal print beach cover-up. It is silk, and sooo comfy and soft. It will look perfect over a bathing suit on the beach!

The wrap has a pull that cinches it at the waist, creating a beautiful sillouhette. I absolutely cannot wait to wear it on the beach! It's so chic! The last item I got was a bright purple beach bag. It is like a traditional beach bag made of that "wheat-like" material, but it is purple with an awesome tan leather handle. I was going to get a beige colored bag, but then I thought a brighter color would be more fun!

The only other item I bought after braving the blood-thirsty Black Friday crowds, was an incredible 3/4 sleeve black top with small white polka-dots from Club Monaco. Can I just say how much I adore that store? If I had unlimited funds, I would definitely buy a large portion of my clothes there, especially work and evening attire.

Speaking of blood-thirstyness, I just read the third Twilight installment, "Eclipse" on Thursday and Friday. It was that good. I just couldn't put it down.

Now, I want to read the fourth book to see what happens next. I may just start reading it today.

Did you brave the Black Friday frenzy? What did you buy? Leave me a comment below!

Hope everyone had a very safe and happy Thanksgiving!

xoxo,

Veronika.

Motivation Mondays: Health, Beauty and Fitness Inspiration

Recently, makeup artist guru extraordinaire Kandee Johnson, who is known for her sweet, positive "glass half full" nature said something that I found to be very impactful on her blog:

let the words that come out of your mouth...encourage, inspire, compliment, and brighten someones day! When you speak positive words into others...you'll be surprised how it actually "speaks" positivity into your own heart and spirit...
never let a compliment rot in your heart because you felt funny telling someone....set your compliments free the moment you think them....you never know how many times that person will replay what you said in their mind...and it can really change their outlook on themselves....and their world!!! Spread compliments, love, and something positive today!!! I'll do it too....let's sweeten up the world!!! can't wait to tell you the surprise.....

I've always been the type of person that (sincerely) compliments people. I never keep anything I have to say inside, because I always feel like it is my duty to brighten someone's day. You never know how a comment can change someone's day or lift their spirits or self confidence. The best part is, complimenting someone else, like Kandee says, actually makes me feel good about myself. It releases a positive energy and distributes good karma into the world.

The idea of spreading positivity and kindness is what inspired me to do the blog post. I realized that there are so many beautiful people (both on the inside and outside) in my life...and although I love to share my thoughts and opinions all things fashion, beauty and makeup, I think it is also important to showcase the people who inspire and motivate me.

Maja is a beautiful, intelligent woman I met recently at my cousin's wedding in my hometown. I was immediately drawn to her because we were both wearing a black flower hair accessory in our hair! It was fate! We ended up chatting the night away about all things girly. It is literally a miracle that we did not meet sooner...we are like long-lost twins!
In addition to her beauty and awesome career, I was most fascinated by her fitness routine. She is one of the most fit women I've ever seen- she has the kind of body many women covet- thin and toned, with no bulkiness in sight! I asked her how she achieved such a fit body, and she agreed to share her wealth of knowledge with my readers.

I just started back at the gym after a post-wedding bout of laziness, so I hope Maja's tips inspire you as much as they did me. Note that this blog contains two parts. This first part will focus on health and fitness, and in part two, Maja will talk fashion and beauty with us (because she has a ton of product-faves I know you guys will love!)

Here's what Maja had to say about her fitness routine, and tips for overall health:

Name: Marija M

Age: 25

Career: Director of Services at an IT Security company

1. You were a ballet dancer for 16 years, what do you do to stay in shape now?

Ballet was a huge part of my life, and still holds a very dear spot in my heart. I danced English style, Royal Academy of Dance ballet which is one of the most formal styles, adhering to traditional, very technically driven ballet. So I’m lucky to have those years in my back pocket when it comes to discipline and staying fit. Although I only dance recreationally now in a few adult classes, I am in the gym 6 – 7 days a week to maintain and improve (that, combined with a clean diet of course). I think one of the most important things for working out is Variety! You need to keep you body guessing as opposed to falling into a rut. This will also prevent you from getting bored and dreading it. Specifically for me, I love the classes my gym offers. My favorites are, ‘Core & Sculpt’ as well as ‘Step’ class (great for the glutes!)

In general, I tend to do more cardio than weight training which is just a personal preference. Weight training is something that everyone should be engaging in. For girls similar to myself (super girly) DO NOT BE SCARED! When I really started to get into the gym I was petrified of bulking up, or becoming too muscular. Stemming from my history in dance and love for the Victoria’s Secret models, I tend to prefer the long, lean, toned look over the muscular look – BUT quickly realized how important strength training is for your overall health and well-being. Here’s the secret that took me a VERY LONG TIME to believe/trust. LOW WEIGHT – HIGH REPS. That is the golden rule for me and when I don’t think I could ever do even just ONE more squat, you can probably do 3 more. Always ALWAYS ALWAYSSS, push yourself!

A sample of what a regular week would look like for me is:

SUNDAY:
Cardio: Elliptical trainer, 60 min
Incline: 70% (high incline really targets the glutes and hamstring area)
Resistance: 35% (lower resistance is good in the sense that it helps keep you in the fat burning stages (as opposed to the cardio stage)

MONDAY:
Core Conditioning – Focusing on strengthening the abdominals and back muscles using a mat, stability ball and weighted ball: Approximately 1 – 1.25 hours

TUESDAY:
Legs – 50 min
Squats (regular and sumo) - Approx 100 squats – No added weight
Lunges - 150 lunges (each leg) – No added weight
Leg Extensions - Approximately 50 Leg Extension – 10 lbs
Leg curls – Approximately 60 – 12.5 lbs

WEDNESDAY:
Cardio: Elliptical trainer, 60 min- Incline: 70% , Resistance: 35%
I also do a Hip Hop or Ballet class on Wednesdays at a local school if I don’t want to go to the gym.

THURSDAY
Interval Drills – 60 min – This class has a cardio element consisting of athletic drills alternating with resistance drills

Core Conditioning – 60 min - Focusing on strengthening the abdominals and back muscles using a mat, stability ball and weighted ball

FRIDAY
Step Class or Boot Camp

SATURDAY
Body Sculpt - Full body conditioning using 3 lb dumbbells, step, stability ball and mat!

Also, to close on this one, if there is one recommend I would make - it is, to go out right now, and invest $20 in the book “Making the Cut” by Jillian Michaels . This is my lean body bible!!!! When you try it, you will know why!

2. What are some foods/snacks/ meals that you would recommend for women who are trying to eat healthier?

I’d like to start off by telling everyone who is reading this, that I eat 7 – 8 times/day! Secondly, I’d like to squash any rumors of Carbohydrates.

Carbs
50%
of your daily calories should come from COMPLEX carbs. There is a common misconception whereby many women think that a diet rich in protein and low carbs is the master plan, but it can actually limit your potential! Also, avoiding carbs like the plague can lead to binge on simple sugars because you're depleting your body from the supply of glucagon that it needs. Glucagon is what gives you that energy everyone loves you for-subsequently turning you into Little Ms Moody/Grumpy.

Caloric intake:
First and foremost, this is NOT the holy grail, but simple mathematics! If you're looking to lose weight, you just need to burn more calories than you're taking in. If you're maintaining, balance them out, and if you're looking to gain, eat more :).

A great way to calculate what your body need is via the following calculations (Please note this does not take muscle mass into account so the numbers will be lower if you're more built):

BMR
655 + (4.35 * your weight in lbs) + (4.7 * Height in inches) - (4.7 * age in years)

THIS # is your Basal Metabolic Rate (calories you burn each day just from being the fun loving girl you are!!)

CALORIC INTAKE
Take your BMR # and multiply it by:
1.375 - if you're mildly active
1.55 - if you're moderately active
1.725 - if you're very active
1.9 – If you're over the top extremely active

=the # of calories you should be consuming daily if you want to maintain your current weight.

Connecting all this back to carbs (I go off on a lot of tangents) take that last # you calculated and divide it in half, then take that # and divide it by 4 (the # of calories/gram of Carbohydrate)=The # of grams of carbs you need each day! Take that and tell Dr. Atkins to shove it!

*Note* I can’t stress this enough - MUSCLE weighs MORE than fat! So if you're looking to kick it up at the gym or are an active member, do not be discouraged if your weight isn't going down. That little number "screaming at you" on the scale isn't not the 'end-all-be-all', its how you look and feel! Instead of the scale (I hardly weigh myself), I use my clothes to gauge progress - They don't lie to you! If you want to go that extra step (some may think its a little over the top), I take my measurements and record progress/maintain size that way. Click HERE for a great summary of what to measure

This is all nice and pleasant (because you can stop thinking carbs are the end of the world now), BUT it is useless unless you stick with some wholesome COMPLEX carbs vs. the sticky icky SIMPLE ones. Some examples:

Complex Examples
GREEN VEGGIES!- Broccoli, Spinach, Green beans, Cucumbers, Asparagus (Our fridge is full of glorious greens!)
Brown Rice
Unsalted Unleavened Rye Bread
Sweet Potatoe
Oats/Grains

Simple Examples
Anything Bleached (white bread, rice, pasta, sugar)
Refined cereals....(On that thought, anything refined should be banished)

On the average day (I am not an experimental person, so this is usually my meal plan every day) I eat:

Breakfast – 7 am

1 Large glass of water
1 scoop of Greens + (I can’t say enough about Greens plus and their benefits, so CLICK HERE to read all about them – I buy the Orange/tangerine flavor and add 3 squirts of lemon juice)
½ scoop Protein with ¾ cup unsweetened Almond milk
¼ cup of Large Flake Organic Oatmeal

Snack – 10 am

Fruit or Granola bar

Lunch – 1 pm

Turkey Warp with Veggies and Salad
OR
Cottage Cheese with mixed fruit
OR
Chicken breast with salad and rice

Snack – 3 pm

Fruit
OR
Non Fat Organic Yogurt
OR
Nuts (peanuts, almonds, or cashews)

Immediately Before the gym – usually 6 pm

¼ scoop of Oatmeal

Immediately After the gym

Weight training – ½ scoop of protein powder for muscle repair
Cardio – Banana to replenish glycogen supply

Dinner (No earlier than 25 min after the last post gym snack)

Chicken or Fish
Lots of VEGGIES (Zucchini, broccoli, Spinach) with Olive Oil
Small portion of brown rice
Salad

Night time snack (optional)

Unsalted Soy nuts

*Daily vitamins:
Multivitamin (for women)
Glutamine (in my protein powder to keep my immune system optimized)
Vitamin C
Calcium (With a lean diet its hard to get the suggested daily intake amount)
B6
Omega 3-6-9 Oils
CLA (should be 3 times a day – assists with fat burning : ))

My daily caloric intake target is about 1250 on a non-active day and can be up to 1800 on a cheat day (I love candy and pastries and will not deny myself a treat every so often)

Here goes my disclaimer…again…This meal plan is relative to my body, proportions, activity level etc. Your own meal plan should cater to your needs and what your body is telling you. The KEY NOTE to takeaway is CLEAN EATING and no junk!!

3. What do you like to wear to the gym?
Anything Lululemon! They understand a woman’s body especially when she is active! They were a bit better when they were privately owned and operated, but are still the top place for me.

There is more to come from Maja later this week, so watch out for that. In the meantime, if you have any questions for this fitness-guru, please leave them in the comments below, and I will ask Maja to answer them when she can!

I hope you all feel motivated and positive! I was definitely more motivated at the gym today after reading Maja's wise words.

Who inspires you? Let me know in the comments below...and remember, when you see someone and you genuinely enjoy something about them, set that compliment free and brighten someone's day!

Veronika.
